Experiencing the simplicity of what the Philippines has to offer, became one of my obsessions since I came back from being an OFW. Beautiful sceneries, breath-taking views, cultural heritage and some exciting festivities, made me more enthusiastic in being a part of it.
But before I forget, let me tell you something about my hometown, Maragondon. It was initially known as Madagundong, meaning maugong; sounds that actually came from a noisy river called Kay Albaran. It was later named Maragondon during the American regime, as it sounded more pleasant to the ear.
Maragondon is a 3rd class municipality of the Province of Cavite. Maragondon is 54 kilometers (34 mi) south-west of Manila. It is known to be the biggest town in the province. It takes about 1-2 hours of travel, depending on traffic, if you are coming from Manila via the Cavitex road. It is also almost an hour away from Tagaytay City.
Our town of Maragondon is of historical importance as this is where Gat. Andres Bonifacio and his brother Procopio Bonifacio was court martialed and was sentenced to death due to their counter revolutionary activities. Bonifacio brothers were executed in Mt. Nagpatong and a monumental shrine was buit in commemoration to this event in history.
On the other hand, the Nuestra Señora dela Asuncion Parish, our town’s parish church, is also of significant value. It has been declared as one of the 26 churches identified as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA). The church is already 399 years old to date as it was built by Jesuit Priests during the 17th century. A huge portion of the church, the belltower and the lower part of the convento (convent) is made out of irregular cut river stones. Inside the church, you can find intricately-carved retables (devotional paintings), pulpits and church doors from Jesuit times.
Maragondon also has the largest mountain range in the whole province of Cavite and has been attracting professional mountain climbers and even beginners. The famous Mt. Pico de Loro, also known as Mt. Palay-Palay, is one of their most sought out trekking destination. It is a dormant volcano that was first named by the Spaniards as Parrots Beak, simply because it is shaped as such if you view it from afar. A breath-taking view of Nasugbu, Batangas to the west and the beautiful landscape of both Ternate and Maragondon in the East, awaits you on the summit.
Another favorite destination, of backpackers and mountaineers, is the Mt. Marami located somewhere in the southern part of the town. There are 2 known jump off points to get to Mt. Marami, one is through Brgy. Ramirez in Magallanes, Cavite and the other is in Brgy. Talipusngo, which is part of Maragondon.The name Marami(many) is attributed to the “many rocks” that formed the mountain. Mt. Marami is known for the Silyang Bato, a rock structure formation that looks like a hanging chair, very good for taking the perfect photos. It was originally named Nagbuo by the locals, but was Christened to Silyang Bato by early mountaineers.
If you would prefer a relaxing stay, Maragondon also has the Riverfront Garden Resort. The resort is located near the Maragondon River, and their swimming pool is located overlooking the river itself. They have cabins for overnight stay and they also offer glamping setups.
There are still several things to do here in Maragondon. These are Maragondon River Cruise, tour to the Carabao Island, several falls: Pico de Loro Falls, Kaybiang Water Falls, Mabato Waterfalls, and an Unnamed Waterfalls in Pantihan 1.
